Five local teams set for football playoff games on Friday

Smithsburg and Boonsboro will begin the Maryland Class 1A West football playoffs going in opposite directions Friday.

The Leopards, by virtue of their 20-13 win over Boonsboro on Friday, jumped into the No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 Allegany (8-2) at 7 p.m. Boonsboro (9-1) is No. 4 and will go on the road to play at No. 1 Fort Hill (8-1), also at 7.

Smithsburg (10-0) is one of only two unbeaten Class 1A teams left in Maryland -- the other is 10-0 Havre de Grace.

Winners of the two games will play in the 1A West final the weekend of Nov. 21-22.

The first round of the West Virginia playoffs begins Friday with Martinsburg and Musselman each hitting the highway.

Martinsburg (8-2) is No. 9 in the Class AAA seedings and will play at No. 8 Cabell Midland on Friday at 7:30. Musselman (6-4), making its first playoff appearance since 2001, is the 16th seed and the prize is a matchup against No. 1 South Charleston (10-0) at the University of Charleston, also Friday at 7:30.

The Pennsylvania playoffs enter the second week with District 3 action and Greencastle-Antrim (10-1) will host another playoff game Friday at Kaley Field, following its win over Kennard-Dale on Friday. The Blue Devils will battle Gardon Spot (7-4) with a 7 p.m. kickoff scheduled.

In boys soccer, the Boonsboro Warriors will meet Pocomoke in the Maryland Class 1A championship game Friday at 5 p.m. That contest will be held at University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
