FREDERICK, Md. - Michael Bunitsky, social studies curriculum specialist for grades six through 12 for Frederick County (Md.) Public Schools, was named Social Studies Leader of the Year by the Maryland Council for the Social Studies.
Bunitsky earned this year's award for contributing exceptional service to Maryland social studies programs, and exhibiting outstanding professional qualities working with students, colleagues and the community, according to a prepared release.
Bunitsky received the award and plaque on Oct. 17 at the council's statewide convention in Prince George's County, where he began his teaching career more than 30 years ago.
Bunitsky went to Frederick County to teach at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. There for 16 years, he also chaired the TJ social studies department, and coached baseball and mock trial. In 1995, he was appointed half-time countywide social studies curriculum specialist and continued as half-time teacher at TJ.
