Rebels will move to 3A in MPSSAA's proposed classification alignments

November 08, 2008

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has released the proposed classification alignments for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. The proposed classification alignments will go before the MPSSAA Board of Control for final approval on Dec. 10. Once the MPSSAA Board of Control adopts classifications, they will remain in effect for the next two school years.

Only one Washington County school will be affected by the new classifications. South Hagerstown will move from Class 2A to 3A.

North Hagerstown will be the third-largest Class 2A school in the state. Boonsboro, Williamsport, Smithsburg, Clear Spring and Hancock will all remain in Class 1A.

Enrollment numbers are submitted to the MPSSAA Executive Director by local superintendents and include the actual enrollment of grades 9 through 11 in each school as of Sept. 30.

The MPSSAA evenly breaks the state's 188 schools into four classifications -- the largest schools residing in Class 4A down to the smallest in Class 1A.
