Washington Township man killed after he's run over by tractor

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A 78-year-old Washington Township man was killed Tuesday afternoon when the tractor he was operating ran over him, Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said.

William J. Hunter, of 45252 Buchanan Trail East, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:17 p.m., Conner said. The accident was called in at 11:41 a.m., he said.

There will be no autopsy. The cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma and the manner was accidental, Conner said.

Hunter was connecting a wagon to a cornpicker attached to the tractor when the tractor began to move forward, Conner said. Hunter tried to get onto the tractor to stop it when he either fell or was knocked over, he said.

The left rear tire of the tractor ran over Hunter, Conner said.

Family members told Conner the tractor was known to have mechanical problems, he said.

The accident also was being investigated by the Washington Township Police Department.
