Smithsburg EMS responds to 85 calls in Oct.

SMITHSBURG - For the month of October, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) responded to 85 calls for service, bringing the 2008 total to 892 calls as of Nov. 1, according to Assistant Chief James Ulrich.

A breakdown for the month includes 27 calls within Smithsburg town limits and 11 calls to the Leitersburg area. The Mount Aetna area had four calls, and six calls were to Cascade and Pen Mar.

Mutual-aid calls to neighboring counties included 10 to Frederick County, Md., and two to Franklin County, Pa. SEMS took 56 patients to local hospitals during the month.

During October, SEMS also assisted the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office with an incident, responded to assist with a house on fire, provided standby crews for three football games and a standby crew for a 5K run at Fort Ritchie.
