Hood College

FREDERICK, Md. - Two Hood College professors recently published their studies of one of the great monuments of late medieval Italian culture.

Anne Derbes, professor of art and co-director of the honors program, and Mark Sandona, professor of English and chair of the English department, studied the early 14th-century Arena Chapel in Padua, Italy, and its frescoes by the Florentine painter Giotto.

In a project that grew out of an honors class and was 10 years in the making, Derbes and Sandona pieced together new historical evidence on the chapel's origins. In "The Usurer's Heart: Giotto, Enrico Scrovengni, and the Arena Chapel in Padua," they offer groundbreaking interpretations on the creation of the frescoes and show how the ensemble of paintings are visually and theologically interrelated.
