Shepherd hosts vocal competition

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd University Department of Music held its annual Vocal Competition on Oct. 11 at the Frank Center for the Arts.

Thirty high school juniors and seniors from West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania participated. During the preliminary auditions that morning, contestants sang for a panel of 12 judges. A recital of the finalists, open to the public, was held in the Frank Arts Center theater.

Jessica Fultran of Rockville, Md., won the first-place female vocalist award, receiving the Pearl and Edward Buck Memorial prize of $300. Garrett Matthews of Germantown, Md., was awarded the first-place male vocalist award, receiving the Jane Grissinger Memorial prize of $300.

Winning the second-place female vocalist award was Ines Nassara of Germantown, receiving a $200 prize. Alexander Foley of Crownsville, Md., won the second-place male vocal award of $200.

Brittany Lackey of Greencastle, Pa., won the third-place female vocalist award of $100. Oliver Holt of St. James won the third-place male vocalist award of $100.

Recognized with merit awards were Olivia Lloyd of Shepherdstown and Justine Moral of Boyds, Md.
