Why do we keep making same mistakes repeatedly?

October 31, 2008|By GARY W. HOOVER Sr.

With the election just days away, I hope this gets your attention.

We have heard all kind of statements this election year, some true and some questionable.

One thing we all can be sure of is that it has been the Republicans and Democrats that have had control of the U.S. government. And together they have made a mess. We can all take our partisan positions and blame it on the other party or we can tell the truth - both parties are responsible for the mess we now have.

We have a deficit of more than $10 trillion that will be passed on to our grandchildren and congress continues to expand it.

We are stuck in a war in Iraq that we should have never begun and that continues to cost us $10 billion a month.

We have an economy that is in the dumps and we have lost millions of jobs in the last eight months.

Unemployment is at a 10 -year high, health care costs are out of control and 42 million Americans are without health insurance. We have seniors who have to make a choice between food and medicine. We have a social security system that will be insolvent in 2017.

Energy costs continue to rise and some do not know how they are going to afford to heat their homes. We have a foreclosure rate that has never been seen before, and a veterans health care program that is in total collapse. Additionally, we have a continuing line of Congressman and Senators going to jail for their actions in office, and Congress has a job approval rating of 11 percent.

Moreover, what are most of us going to do on Nov. 4? Most will go out and elect another person from one of these parties that have so failed us, our children and our grandchildren.

The next generation will be the first generation in history that will be expected to have less then the generation before it. We inherited a great country from what we call the greatest generation. That generation was willing to do what it took to make sure our generation had freedom and a chance of prosper in our country.

It is our turn, our generation's time, to make sure that we pass on to the next generation a country with the same, if not more, freedom and opportunity to prosper that we inherited.

Or are we going to continue electing a member of one of the parties that has allowed this mess to happen? If you like what they have been doing for us, then elect Jennifer Dougherty or re-elect Rep. Roscoe Bartlett to the U.S. Congress.

If you want real change, vote for me and together we will change the country and send a message to Congress that enough is enough.

Gary W. Hoover Sr. is the Libertarian candidate for the Maryland 6th District seat in the U.S House of Representatives.
