Hagerstown's Mummers Parade short of fundraising goal

October 30, 2008|By HEATHER KEELS

HAGERSTOWN -- With the Alsatia Mummers Parade only days away, organizers say they've met only half of their fundraising goal and aren't sure how they will pay for prizes.

As of Wednesday, organizers had raised $6,900, parade chairman James G. McCleaf II said. That's enough to cover the $5,300 in travel expenses for the University of Maryland marching band, but doesn't leave much for prizes.

Ideally, organizers would have liked to raise $8,500 for prizes, McCleaf said.

"I don't know how we're going to make it, to be honest," McCleaf said. "We're hoping that people still help us financially."

The parade is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, rain or shine. It runs along Potomac Street from Charles Street to Howard Street and features floats, performers and mummers.
