WILLIAMSPORT -- The cold and blustery conditions made it feel like January on Tuesday, but Williamsport was in October form. The Wildcats survived the elements and beat Poolesville 2-0 in a Maryland Class 1A West boys soccer quarterfinal.

Williamsport (12-4) advances to play at second-seeded Northern Garrett. Northern advanced to the semifinal with an 8-0 win over Brunswick.

"We knew Poolesville was going to be a very tough team to beat," Williamsport coach Chris Downs said. "But we felt like we would have enough chances to make some things happen."

Williamsport took the shutout on the strength of six saves by goalkeeper Derek Munro.

The game was scoreless until Williamsport broke the ice in the 67th minute on midfielder Bryan Whitmore's unassisted goal through the middle.

Forward Michael Reyes scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute for the Wildcats' second goal.

Poolesville (6-4-4) outshot Williamsport 10-9.

"Both teams gave 100 percent and played pretty well," Poolesville coach Christos Nicholas said.
