SYA wrestling



Sign-up for SYA wrestling is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Smithsburg Fire Hall. Forms and information also are available at www.smithsburgyouthathletics.org.

SYA wrestling is for boys and girls ages 5 to 14. Wrestlers practice two days per week beginning the week of Nov. 10, from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the Smithsburg High School wrestling room.

Registration fee is $60 for the first wrestler in each family and $45 for each additional child. Scholarships are available through the Web site.

Students nominated as Good Citizens of the month for September for Trustworthiness at Cascade Elementary were:

Kindergarten - Carrie Krietz and Jacob Shifler; first grade - Lindsey Aughinbaugh and Jordan Ingram; second grade - Taylor Bassler and Hunter Wiley; third grade - Joseph Coleman and Kayla Collins; fourth grade - Joshua Dwyer and Hunter Ingram; fifth grade - Lauren Mann and Connor McCoy; art - Angelo Cocchiaro, grade three, and Emma Protsch, grade four.

Smithsburg Elementary



Thursday - First-grade field trip to Rose Hill, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday - 2 1/2-hour-early dismissal (11:55 a.m.); end of first marking period.

Also, 2008-09 yearbooks are on sale through Nov. 7 at a cost of $18. If you would like to order one and did not receive a form, please call the school.

Tailgate party



Smithsburg High School students and community members are invited to a Leopard tailgate party Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria and deck to celebrate the last football game of the season. The party will include food, carnival games and local entertainment. Performances by the flag squad, cheerleaders and SHS pep band are expected. Awards will be given for the Most Spirited Group, Most Spirited Individual, Best Little Leopard and Most Spirited Family.

The cost is $5 per person, which includes a picnic dinner consisting of hot dogs, steamers, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, chips, drinks and dessert. The junior class is sponsoring the event and all proceeds go to the 2009 junior/senior prom. Parent or community volunteers are needed; those interested should contact Laura Smith or Jamie Paci at Smithsburg High. Interested alumni band members should contact Ruth Osik at Smithsburg High.
