University of Md. awards scholarships to Washington County students

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The office of Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland has announced that the following students from Washington County have been awarded scholarships:

o Gretchen Downey, a freshman from Smithsburg who is studying environmental science and policy, has been awarded the William D. Godwin Endowed Scholarship.

o Garrett Hamby, a freshman from Williamsport who is studying animal sciences, has been awarded the Southern States Cooperative Scholarship and the Mylo S. Downey Scholarship. The Southern States Cooperative Scholarship for sons or daughters of agricultural producers is awarded to academically talented students with two or more years of active FFA or 4-H membership. The need-based Mylo S. Downey Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students with 4-H achievement.

o Steven Hutzell, a junior from Hagerstown who is studying Natural Resource Sciences, has been awarded the James R. and Dessie M. Moxley Scholarship, which is awarded to deserving students pursuing degrees in natural resource sciences and landscape architecture.
