Student treated after van hits bus in W.Va.

October 24, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A student was treated for minor injuries Friday morning at City Hospital after a van rear-ended a school bus that the child was riding in northern Berkeley County, said Jaimee Borger, director of communications for Berkeley County Schools.

The driver of the van fled on foot from the accident scene at the intersection of Emerson and Ruby drives in the Potomac Hills subdivision off Grade Road after it happened about 6:45 a.m., Borger said.

A parent of another student later notified the school district's transportation department that another child complained of possible accident-related injury symptoms after being dropped off at Spring Mills Middle School, Borger said.

School officials were not able to confirm whether the second child was taken to the hospital, Borger said.

Borger said 30 students were on Bus 115, which was picking up children on the first run of the day when the accident happened.

The bus received minor damage, and the van had significant damage and was abandoned by the driver, Borger said.

West Virginia State Police were investigating the accident.
