Fish dinner

On Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., the trustees of Ebenezer AME Church, 40 Bethel St., will hold a fish dinner. The menu includes fried fish, cabbage, potato salad, cornbread and dessert. Dinner costs $8.

Halloween party

The Memorial Recreation Center will host its annual Halloween party Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Center gymnasium. The party will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

As in the past, there will be lots of games, activities and food and drinks for the neighborhood kids. Each child will also receive a bag filled with "goodies."

Please note, on Oct. 30 the MRC's after-school program will close at 4 p.m. so the staff can prepare for the Halloween party. Be sure to arrive at 4 p.m. so all of the decorations, favors and activities will be ready.

Book club

If you haven't read this month's book, "Infidel," by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, there is still time before the Sisters-In-Spirit Book Club gathering. They will meet Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m. Contact Ladetra Robinson via e-mail at for the meeting place.

Save the date

The Washington County Chapter of the American Cancer Society will hold its 19th annual Grand Sunday Brunch at Next Dimensions Restaurant on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

They will honor their "Road to Recovery" volunteers who give of their time to transport cancer patients to and from treatment.

As in the past, Lou Scally will be the master of ceremonies. Music will be provided by Panache Entertainment. There will be face painting by Mary Jane Koontz and magicians Hugh McVeagh, Dean Burkitt and Jim Greer will entertain.

Tickets are available for purchase at Next Dimensions Restaurant, 132 Old National Pike.

Basketball tryouts

The Tri-State Youth Athletic Association (Junior Hubs girls basketball) will hold tryouts for girls attending Northern Middle School, Western Heights Middle School and girls living in the North Hagerstown High School area on Monday Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Oct. 29 at the Northern Middle School gym from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Tryouts will be held from 7 to 7:45 p.m. for sixth-graders and 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. for seventh- and eighth-graders. There is a registraton fee.

Players need to attend only one tryout session. Games will begin in November and end in March.
