Homecoming this weekend

If you haven't heard, this is homecoming weekend at South Hagerstown High School and a full calendar promises to keep us on our toes.

The festivities kick off Thursday with a bonfire at School Stadium from 7 to 9 p.m. All the sports teams will be represented and recognized.

The game is Friday at 7 p.m. against Middletown. Tailgating will begin at 4 p.m.

The big dance is Saturday and tickets can be purchased this week in school.

Day for veterans to include game

While we are on the subject of the greatest game ever ... let's turn the calendar to December for a minute. On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Sons of the American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown will host a get-together for veterans during the 109th meeting of the Army/Navy game.

In attendance will be about 35 veterans from the VA hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., along with post members. The Legion is very pleased to be able to provide this outing for the veterans from the VA hospital. Lou Guerreo, first vice commander, has been instrumental in putting this together and has secured merchandise from the military academy at West Point and the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Grand Sunday Brunch to be held Nov. 9

Volunteerism is a binding thread that keeps our community together and we as a society should do more to get involved. The American Cancer Society is taking the time to honor such volunteers.

The "Road to Recovery" volunteers take time out of their lives to transport cancer patients to and from treatment. The 19th annual Grand Sunday Brunch will be Nov. 9 at Next Dimensions, just south of Funkstown. Lou Scally will be master of ceremonies and music will be provided by Panache Entertainment. There will be face painting for the children and magicians for children of all ages. Tickets are available for purchase at Next Dimensions.
