Harold P. Green, 95



OCT. 30, 1912-OCT. 17, 2008

Harold Perry Green, 95, of 10116 Sharpsburg Pike, Hagerstown and formerly of East Oak Ridge Drive near Funkstown, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Somerford House Assisted Living near Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 30, 1912, in Beaver Creek, Md., he was a son of the late Perry Columbus and Cora Harrison Green.

Harold was a graduate of Boonsboro High School and Juniata College and began his teaching career during the Depression years. He did graduate work at the University of Maryland and received his master's degree from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College).

Harold was a math and science teacher for 38 years in Washington County Schools. His career encompassed five schools: Woodland Way Junior High School, Hagerstown High School, Washington Junior High School, South Potomac Junior High School and E. Russell Hicks Middle School.

Harold combined his teaching career with ministerial duties at the Fahrney-Keedy Home Chapel. He was an ordained minister in theƂ Church of the Brethren and served as a pastor, Sunday school teacher, moderator and lifetime church member. He was also a cancer survivor of 11 years.

Harold is survived by his wife of 68 years, Julia May Phillips Green, whom he married Oct. 26, 1940; one son, Harold Ronald Green and his wife, Suzanne Croll Green, of Clarksville, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Judy Isner Green of Clear Spring, Md.; one brother, Paul Cletus Green and wife, Clara Graham Green, of Mercersburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Michelle Green Kalendek, Tonya Green Oberhaus, Allyson Duker Green, Douglas Stuart Green and Nicole Green Ritchey; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Russell Green; one grandson, Robert Russell Green Jr.; one great-grandson, Gavin Ritchey; three brothers, Russell Lauren Green, Arvine Austin Green and Willard Ivan Green; and one sister, Iona Green Suman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home in Boonsboro. The Rev. Louis R. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Phyllis A. Godlove, 91

WILLIAMSPORT -- Phyllis Arlene Godlove, 91, of Williamsport died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.

Born May 30, 1917, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of John R. and Fannie B. Semler Fridinger Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell W. Godlove, in 1997.

She drove a Red Cross ambulance during World War II.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Hagerstown Elks Lodge 378, Ladies of the Elks and Associates, and the Queen Esther 3.

She is survived by two sons, Larry E. Godlove Sr. of Williamsport and Gary W. Godlove of Hancock; one brother, John R. Fridinger Jr. of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Delancy Catlett will officiate.

A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ellen M. Burnett, 88

GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. -- Ellen Mary McGurgan Burnett, 88, of Great Cacapon, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Sept. 17, 1920, in Shamokin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Alfred and Maude Agnes Mausser Carl.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Patrick Francis McGurgan, in 1994; and her second husband, Edwin George Burnett, in 2005.

She was a graduate of public schools in Shamokin.

She worked as a key punch operator for the Fairfax County, Va. public school system.

She was a member of Berkeley Springs Church of the Nazarene.

She is survived by two daughters, Marianne L. Edwards of Manassas, Va., and T. Candie McGurgan of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons, Paul F. McGurgan of Waco, Texas, William M. McGurgan Sr. of Great Cacapon and William M. McGurgan Jr. of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three sisters, Ethel S. Fritz of Waco, Texas, Ruth M. Reynard of Hamilton, Va., and Gladys H. Carl of Arlington, Va; one brother, Philip N. Carl of Canton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
