Hagerstown High class of 1956 gathers as classmates turn 70

October 19, 2008

The last class to graduate from Hagerstown High School, the class of 1956, recently commemorated a birthday celebration that spanned three days.

The class of 1956, which held its 50th anniversary class reunion in 2006, came together to share an event to mark the 70th birthday of classmates.

The weekend celebration began on Friday evening on Sept. 19 at the residence of class member Don Bowman and his wife, Jone, at their Milestone farm home.

The Bowmans opened their home and furnished food and drinks along with an ice cream sundae bar.

A giant 70th birthday cake was enjoyed by all.

All evening, classmates mingled and chatted about old times and shared many memories about their school days and life in the '50s.

On Sunday afternoon, class members gathered at the Williamsport Red Men and dined on Maryland steamed crabs, steamed shrimp, along with fried chicken and all the trimmings. About 150 class members and their spouses and guests attended and many bushels of crabs were consumed.

Entertainment was provided by DJ "Ta Da," with golden oldies '50s and '60s music being played to bring back those wonderful memories of long ago. Later in the evening, karaoke took over and lots of class members showcased their talent.

To cap off the weekend, many came to a buffet breakfast on Sunday morning.

Some class members came from Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Colorado and Washington state.

The class of 1956 was the largest class to graduate from Hagerstown High School with 438 members. To date, the class has 78 deceased members.

The class of '56 has been holding luncheons every quarter. The next luncheon will be Oct. 22 at the Western Sizzlin Steakhouse on York Road at 11:30 a.m. All class members, spouses and friends are welcome to attend and enjoy lunch and conversation.
