Bark in the Park makes noise for Humane Society of Washington County

October 17, 2008

More than 200 dogs and their human companions attended the inaugural Bark in the Park on Oct. 11 in Doub's Woods Park. The event raised more than $6,000 for the Humane Society of Washington County.

The event began with a blessing of the pets by Pastor Jerry Lowans of St. Mathew's United Methodist and Washington Square United Methodist churches.

Herald-Mail columnist Tim Rowland and his Bouvier Des Flanders, Opie, served as parade marshals. Joined by his wife Beth and their Bulldog Hannah, the foursome led a crowd of more than 75 walkers who enjoyed a mid-morning stroll around the park.

Adding to the festivities were various rescue groups, vendors and book signings by Rowland and Pat Miller. K9 units from the Hagerstown City Police Department and Washington County Sheriff's Department provided demonstrations and the Animal Health Clinic of Funkstown's Angie Cristol and Heather Martin offered pet first aid demonstrations. Also available were rabies and microchip clinics and dog licenses were for sale.
