WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- A Greencastle, Pa., woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision with a dump truck in front of 84 Lumber on Pa. 16 west of Waynesboro.

Evelyn L. Rowe, 86, was driving a blue 1998 Buick Century that hit a 1978 GMC dump truck at 2:15 p.m., according to a news release from Franklin County (Pa.) Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

The heavily traveled section of Pa. 16 was closed for more than two hours as police and fire police rerouted westbound traffic onto Prices Church Road.

"The fire police do a really good job of shutting everything down," Washington Township (Pa.) Police Sgt. Vern Ashway said.

Police interviewed witnesses while the severely damaged four-door car was towed. One man who was driving behind the Buick Century reportedly told police that Rowe suddenly crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane.

Conner, who pronounced Rowe dead at the scene at 2:58 p.m., said he plans to perform an autopsy today in Chambersburg, Pa., to determine the cause of her death. He said Rowe was not wearing a seat belt.

A veterinarian and personnel with the Antietam Humane Society used a backboard when removing a gray dog from the car. They gave the dog IV fluids and took it from the scene in the back of a sport utility vehicle.

Police did not return a phone call concerning any injuries to the dump truck's adult male driver. The empty dump truck was reportedly slowing as the driver prepared to turn left into a field.
