October 16, 2008

Newly opened Washington High School got a boost for its athletic programs this year when the Moose Lodge 948 in Ranson donated $10,000 for the school's sports programs, according to a news release from the organization.

Money for the club's grants comes from the organization's limited slot machines, tip jars and special events, according to the news release. Members of the local Moose lodge along W.Va. 115 said for their most recent year, they made 69 charitable grants totaling nearly $100,000, according to the release.

Gov. Joe Manchin is scheduled to be at the local Moose club at 7:40 p.m. today as part of a spotlight on the effort, according to a club spokesman and Manchin's office.

The Moose Lodge 948 and Women of the Moose Lodge 1028 have nearly 3,500 members. Other organizations the club funds are Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic, Meals on Wheels, the American Red Cross and the county's volunteer fire companies, the release said.
