Hagerstown man ordered to face sexual abuse charges

October 15, 2008

A Hagerstown man charged with sexually abusing a 3-year-old girl appeared Tuesday in Washington County District Court for a preliminary hearing.

After hearing an investigator's testimony, Judge Ralph H. France II found there was probable cause to proceed with the charges against Steven Wayne Stevenson, 26, of no fixed address. Stevenson is charged with sexual abuse of a minor, third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault, court records show.

The charges stem from an investigation that began Aug. 2, when the girl's mother noticed blood in her underwear and took her to Washington County Hospital, Washington County Sheriff's Department Investigator Kenny Barnhart said.

Stevenson, who watched the girl while her mother was at work Aug. 1 and 2, told investigators the injury probably happened when she fell onto a rung of a bunk bed ladder, but hospital staff said her injury was not consistent with that explanation, Barnhart said.

In an interview with a Child Advocacy Center member, the girl indicated that Stevenson molested her, Barnhart said.

On Tuesday, France continued Stevenson's $150,000 bond. The case will proceed to Washington County Circuit Court, France said.
