W.Va. state police corporal among 16 service personnel honored

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police in Jefferson County have had high numbers of drunken driving arrests in recent years and much of the success can be attributed to Cpl. Michael Dickerson, a state police spokesman said Tuesday.

Dickerson, of Martinsburg, W.Va., has worked at the Jefferson County barrack for about nine years, and many of the detachment's 10 troopers have been trained by him, Sgt. Ed Anderson said.

"He's been so essential to our success," Anderson said.

Dickerson was one of 16 police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel honored Tuesday night at the eighth annual Public Service Recognition Banquet at Charles Town Races & Slots.

The banquet, sponsored by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and the track, honors outstanding police and other emergency responders.

Last December, Jefferson County state police led the three Eastern Panhandle counties in DUI arrests - a total of 41 - during a holiday crackdown on drunken driving, state police said.

In 2005, West Virginia State Police in the three Eastern Panhandle counties made more than 600 drunken driving arrests, which was nearly triple the number of driving under the influence arrests made in other state police districts in the state, state police said.

Police said at the time the high number of drunken driving arrests could be partly attributed to the number of people who cross the state line into the Eastern Panhandle after bars in neighboring states have closed.

Others honored Tuesday were:

o Robert Shackelford, Jefferson County Ambulance Authority

o Christopher J. Carter, Blue Ridge Mountain Fire Co., emergency medical services and firefighting

o Justice Jones, Friendship Fire Co., emergency medical services

o Douglas A. Evans, Independent Fire Co., emergency medical services
