October 13, 2008

HAGERSTOWN -- A Kentucky man was killed Sunday night when his car struck a tanker trailer on Interstate 70 west of Md. 65, Maryland State Police said.

Robert Lewis Bolen, 44, of Upton, Ky., was driving west at about 7:20 p.m. when his 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo crossed the median and struck an empty milk truck in the eastbound lanes, police said. Bolen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car initially struck the truck's tire, then hit its fuel tank area, police said.

The truck entered the median and jackknifed, police said. The driver of the truck, Charlie Eugene Briggs, 58, of Winter Haven, Fla., was taken to Washington County Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Eastbound I-70 was closed for about three hours for investigation and removal of the vehicles, police said.

Briggs was in the emergency department Sunday night, a hospital spokeswoman said. On Monday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said he had been released from the hospital.
