Commissioners recognize lab tech of the year

Washington County Commissioners President John F. Barr recognized the achievement of a county lab technician Tuesday.

Davina Yutzy, a technician for the county's Water Quality Department, was given the 2008 Water Environment Federation Laboratory Analyst Excellence Award by the Chesapeake Water Environment Association.

The award is given to one laboratory analyst every year in Maryland.

Yutzy tests water and wastewater for metals, nitrates and other impurities, said Julie Pippel, director of Environmental Management for Washington County.

Yutzy praised her colleagues during the recognition Tuesday.

"Anyone in the lab could qualify for this," Yutzy said. "They're all top-notch people."

October is Disabilities Awareness Month

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday proclaimed October as Disabilities Awareness Month.

Commissioners President John F. Barr read a proclamation stating that October is Disabilities Awareness Month across the U.S.

The proclamation also highlighted the goals of the Washington County Disability Advisory Committee - that people with disabilities should be empowered to achieve personal and professional goals, as well as live full, independent and productive lives.
