New business spotlight - Business helps meet kids' needs

October 12, 2008

Name of business: Enkore Kids

Owner: Kevin and Jennifer Guenther and Susan McCarthy

Address: 146 S. Main St., Boonsboro

Opening date: Initially founded in Frederick, Md., in June 2003 by Jennifer Guenther. Relocated to Boonsboro in June 2008.

Products and services: "We sell new and 'new to you' children's clothing from newborn to size 14, maternity clothing, toys and related baby equipment. New lines we carry include Melissa & Doug, Robeez, Webkinz, Ergo Baby Carriers and Cloth Diapers."

Market area: "We draw customers to our retail store from as far as the Eastern Shore, but with our online business, our customers have come from all over the world."

How did you get into your business, or what motivated you to start it? "Though there are some children's consignment stores in the area, Enkore Kids is different in that we buy most items outright at the time of our customer's appointment for cash or twice that amount in store credit," Jennifer Guenther said. "As a mom, I've found that consignment can be frustrating when you don't know how much you'll be making on your items until they've already sold, and it may be months before you get anything for them. At Enkore Kids, parents can sell us their children's items and turn around and immediately buy the things their children need now."

Previous business experience: Before founding Enkore Kids, Jennifer Guenther was a store manager for Circuit City.
