Apple Butter Festival spreads fun in Berkeley Springs

October 11, 2008|By TRISH RUDDER

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The 35th annual Apple Butter Festival kicked off Saturday in Berkeley Springs.

Many attended the festival to buy apple butter and eat country ham sandwiches and funnel cakes.

The Pleasant View Community Center will sell about 180 gallons of apple butter at the festival, said Virginia Hessler, who was running the booth along with Carol Santmier.

"People will stand in line to buy it," Hessler said.

"We sell out every year," Santmier said.

There were other attractions at the event, including vendors and a tattoo artist.

Hannah Reed, 12, a student at Warm Springs Middle School, was happy she found Black 'n Blue Temporary Tattoos and got an airbrushed tattoo on her ankle.

It will last up to two weeks, said Dina Colada, the airbrush artist. Most of her customers are about 11 years old, she said.

Colada said this is her first year at the festival.

"It's been a great day," she said.

Hannah's mother, Kim Reed, watched while her daughter got her first tattoo, which was allowed only because it was temporary.

Kim Reed said she comes to the festival to buy apple butter and eat funnel cakes, she said.

"My grandmom is 90, and I'll take a funnel cake home to her," she said.

Six people aboard a trolley servicing an off-site parking area for the 35th annual Apple Butter Festival were taken to the hospital for minor injuries Saturday after the vehicle reportedly was cut off while traveling on U.S. 522, emergency officials said.

Emergency rescue personnel from Morgan County and Hancock took the riders to the hospital after the vehicle's reaction to another motorist near Jimstown Road caused the riders to "tumble," officials said.

West Virginia State Police were investigating the accident, according to emergency dispatch officials.
