Alsatia Mummers Parade seeking donations, volunteers

HAGERSTOWN -- Alsatia Mummers Parade officials are looking for donations and volunteers to help stage the annual event, which is scheduled for Nov. 1.

Parade chairman James McCleaf said the ideal amount to cover expenses for the Halloween tradition would be almost $14,000 -- $8,500 to pay for prizes and $5,300 to pay travel expenses for the University of Maryland marching band, which agreed earlier this year to participate in the parade.

McCleaf said he is relying heavily on local governments and corporate sponsors to donate money. The City of Hagerstown and the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau have pledged a total of $4,500, he said.

"(Donors) can give as much or as little as they can," McCleaf said. "Everything will be appreciated."

McCleaf also would like to find about "two to three dozen" volunteers to serve as marshals and set up chairs along the route. Volunteers should be 18 years of age or older.

"If someone calls, we'll certainly put them to work," McCleaf said.

The annual parade features floats, performers and mummers.

About 135 entries are registered for this year's event, McCleaf said. Up to 100,000 people could line the parade route if the weather is good.

Tickets for the 84th Alsatia Mummers Parade may be purchased at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, McCleaf said. The cost is $5 for a bleacher seat and $8 for a chair.
