Repairs to Williamsport cemetery could cost $25,000

October 09, 2008

WILLIAMSPORT -- Resetting and replacing tombstones damaged this weekend by vandals at Riverview Cemetery will cost between $20,000 and $25,000, said Craig Osborne, president of the Riverview Cemetery Association's Board of Directors.

The damage was reported Monday to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Osborne received the estimate Wednesday through a monument company, he said.

The estimate includes the cost of resetting the tombstones that were knocked off their bases, Osborne said. Investigators have said between 50 and 55 tombstones were knocked over.

About five of the tombstones were damaged and need to be replaced. The estimate also covers that cost, Osborne said.

Osborne and town officials have said they expect insurance to cover the cost of repairs.
