Apple Butter Festival highlights

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Vendors at this year's Apple Butter Festival are determined to make it a sweet and sticky Columbus Day weekend.

Gallons of apple butter will flow at the 35th annual Apple Butter Festival. The event, which draws thousands of people, is Saturday and Sunday in downtown Berkeley Springs.

Vendors will make apple butter on site. There will also be other baked goods.

But it's not all about the food. There's a turtle race, a hog-calling contest and a beard and mustache contest, and live music scheduled both days.

Here are a few highlights from this year's festival:

Saturday, Oct. 11. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

o 9 a.m. -- Parade. The parade route will travel from Berkeley Springs High School, north through the square to the old train station on Williams Street. Parade winners will be announced at 11 a.m. at the bandstand.


o 10:30 a.m. -- Festival begins.

o 11 a.m. -- Turtle race. Assemble at the courthouse.

o 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. -- Bluegrass band New Moon performs. The band will perform again from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m.

o 1:45 p.m. -- Apple butter and bake contests winners will be announced. Bandstand.

o 2 to 2:45 p.m. -- Critton Hollow String Band will perform. The band performs again from 3:15 to 4 p.m.

o 2:50 p.m. -- Beard and mustache contest at the bandstand.

Sunday, Oct. 12. Noon to 5 p.m.

o 1 to 2 p.m. -- Tri State Community Band performs. The band will play again from 2:45 to 4 p.m.

o 1:15 p.m. -- Egg toss, bring a partner and assemble at the bandstand.

o 2:15 p.m. -- Hog calling contest, assemble at the bandstand.

o 4:15 p.m. -- Apple butter quilt drawing. Stitched by Rika Bennett. Tickets available at the Chamber of Commerce booth in the park.
