Artists sought to color Hagerstown butterflies

October 09, 2008|By DAN DEARTH

HAGERSTOWN -- Washington County Public Schools on Wednesday issued a call for artists to paint butterfly statues that will be displayed next spring in and around downtown Hagerstown.

Each artist will receive $750 per statue.

Dale Bannon, director of system development for Washington County Public Schools, said Wednesday during a press conference at City Hall that businesses, individuals, organizations and local governments have agreed to sponsor the creation of 15 statues.

The butterfly was chosen to symbolize the birth of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts and Hagerstown's Arts and Entertainment District, Bannon said.

The dimensions of the statues will be about 5 feet by 5 feet.

Officials would like to find 15 more sponsors, Bannon said. Proceeds from the sponsorships will be used to benefit special programs at the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.

The school is to open in the heart of the Arts and Entertainment District on South Potomac Street in the fall of 2009. Students in grades nine through 12 will receive a core education at the school with an emphasis in the arts.

Elizabeth Morgan, superintendent of Washington County Public Schools, said the school's course offerings in digital and graphic technology would help students be more competitive in today's global economy.

"Parents want more for their kids today," Morgan said as she donned a pair of pink and green butterfly wings to show her support for the project. "The Barbara Ingram School for the Arts will give them exposure."

Michael Thorsen, principal of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, said the school has received inquiries from potential students in Asia, Europe and across the United States.

Thorsen said school officials will begin accepting applications in December and hold auditions in February. The first class, which will number between 150 and 200 students, will be selected in March, he said.
