Smithsburg EMS responds to 81 calls

During September, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) responded to 81 calls for service, bringing the 2008 total to 806 calls as of Oct. 1.

There were 25 calls within Smithsburg town limits and eight calls to the Leitersburg area. The Mount Aetna area call volume increased to 11 calls, while the four calls to Cascade and Pen Mar were about average.

Mutual-aid calls to neighboring counties included eight to Frederick County, Md., and three to Franklin County, Pa. During peak call volumes in other areas of the county, SEMS provided transfer crews to Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue and Community Rescue Service.

SEMS took 51 patients to local hospitals during the month, according to James Ulrich, assistant chief.
