Smithsburg raises building inspection fees

October 08, 2008

SMITHSBURG - Building inspection fees were upped for Smithsburg residential and commercial properties Tuesday night in a move that was blamed partly on the current worldwide financial crisis.

Because the number of inspections is down, the costs have risen. The increases will be needed so the Town of Smithsburg can just break even, according to Randy Dick, building inspector for the town.

"The new fees will be $100 plus 10 cents per square foot for residential and $150 plus 10 cents per square foot for commercial," Dick said.

Unchanged since the mid-1990s, the current fee is $50 plus 7 cents per square foot.

"We're not making any money on this," Dick said.
