Md. man faces drug possession and other charges in Berkeley County
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police say a man gagged while attempting to swallow a small plastic bag containing heroin after an officer stopped the vehicle he was driving Tuesday after it allegedly went through an intersection without stopping.
Thomas Robert Lane, 48, of Catonsville, Md., was arraigned by Berkeley County Magistrate Joan V. Bragg on one felony count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in addition to multiple misdemeanor offenses on his birthday, according to court records.
Bragg set a $50,000 bond for the defendant, who was charged by Martinsburg Police Department patrol officer S.M. Spiker.
Spiker said police found four capsules of heroin, a crack cocaine rock in the man's sock and $80 in cash, according to the complaint.
The officer said in her complaint that she stopped the defendant in the 500 block of West King Street after the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection of Burke Street and Maple Avenue, records show.
Police removed the baggie from the defendant's mouth after he refused more than once to spit it out, Spiker said.
