Virginia man killed in U.S. 340 crash in Jefferson County

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A Winchester, Va., man was killed early Monday when the Toyota Tercel he was driving went off U.S. 340 near the Rainbow Diner & Truck Stop, became airborne and struck several vehicles in a used car lot, said a Jefferson County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Danny Alberto, 21, was partially thrown out of the car, which landed on him, said Sgt. Ronald Fletcher.

Alberto was driving south on U.S. 340 south of Charles Town at about 12:15 a.m. when he went into a turn and lost control, Fletcher said.

Alberto's car went into the northbound lane, exited the road, went up an embankment and became airborne, Fletcher said. The Toyota then struck three other cars and a trailer in the used car lot, and flipped two or three times as it struck the vehicles, Fletcher said.

Alberto's car landed on its top, pinning him, Fletcher said.

Speed appeared to be the sole factor in the crash, Fletcher said.

"He was just driving too fast," Fletcher said.

It was unclear where Alberto was heading, Fletcher said.

Police tried to find relatives of Alberto in several locations but were unable to find anyone.

"No one really knew him," Fletcher said.
