Grier in contention for Open crown

MITCHELLVILLE, Md. -- Hagerstown's Ashley Grier is in third place in the 10th Maryland Women's Open following the first round at the Country Club of Woodmore on Monday.

The 2006 champion, Grier posted a 2-over-par 74 on the par-72, 6,000-yard layout and stood three shots behind Jenny Suh's 71, the only player in the field to shoot below par.

Grier started with three bogeys in her first five holes with a birdie and after a double-bogey 7 on the 11th hole, rebounded with closing birdies on 13 and 18 to get back into position.

Suh, from River Bend in Fairfax, Va., is the defending champion. In second place with a 73 was Dana Lacey.

Grier, Suh and Lacey are in the last pairing in today's final round at 11:10 a.m.


HCC 3, Potomac State 2

Chris Lambert scored two goals and Tyler McKenrick added one goal and two assists to lead Hagerstown Community College to a victory over Potomac State.


HCC led 3-1 until Potomac State scored in the final 20 seconds of the match.

Josh Edwards had an assist for HCC (8-4-1).

Potomac State outshot HCC, 21-10. Goalkeeper Harold Little had eight saves for the Hawks.

Hole-in-one for Spreng

Josh Spreng, of Hagerstown, hit a hole-in-one on the 173-yard 13th hole at Penn National Golf Club on Thursday during Antietam Healthcare Foundation's 13th annual golf tournament. Spreng received a two-year lease on a 2008 Toyota Camary.

Shepherd announces SWING events

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. --  The Shepherd University women's athletic teams will hold their first SWING (Shepherd Women Inspiring Networking Growing) event of the 2008-09 year when they host Longaberger Basket Bingo on Oct. 12 at the Shepherdstown Fire Hall.

"It is a great time to be a women's athlete at Shepherd as we are uniting to help foster a community of supporters for our female athletes," said Shepherd head women's basketball coach Jodie Runner.

The SWING Club was created after a successful golf outing at Maryland National last spring. This year the group is running two additional events, a Spaghetti Dinner on Jan. 17 at the home basketball game and a season long raffle wth the winner geting $4,000.00. The winner will be drawn at the SWING Golf Outing on April 24, 2009.
