Hunter, Golden Eagles send Shepherd to fourth consecutive loss

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - DaRante Hunter rushed 13 times for a game-high 87 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday to lead University of Charleston to a 21-12 win over Shepherd University in a WVIAC game.

The Golden Eagles (4-2, 3-1) held a 7-0 lead at the intermission as Hunter teamed with wide receiver Terrance Spencer on an 80-yard scoring strike with 4:21 left before halftime. Wes Sherrill added the extra point.

The Rams (2-4, 0-4) failed on two scoring chances in the first half. Shepherd missed a field goal and lost a fumble after sophomore Deante Steele returned a punt 69 yards to give the Rams a first-and-goal at the Charleston 2.

Steele got the Rams to within a point at 7-6 when he took a Charleston punt and dashed 95 yards for a score with 1:56 left in the third quarter. The 95-yard punt return ties the school record set by George Hott against Gallaudet in 1954. The extra point attemptwas blocked.


Hunter scored from the 9 with 9:40 remaining to increase the Charleston lead to 14-6.

Hunter added an insurance score on a 66-yard gallop with 2:03 remaining for a 21-6 lead.

Shepherd quarterback Tyler Lazear connected with junior wide Nasser Muhammad on a 4-yard scoring strike to cut Shepherd's deficit to 21-12 with 15 seconds left. Shepherd failed on a two-point pass attempt.

Lazear completed 24-of-35 passes for 214 yards for the Rams. Hunter was 9-of-16 for 148 yards for the Golden Eagles.

Redshirt-freshman wide receiver Neal Hardie led the Rams with six catches for 55 yards. Spencer led UC with six receptions for a game-high 116 yards.

Senior linebacker Jacquez Taylor led the Rams defense with eight tackles, including five solos. Austin McClain had 10 stops (four solo) to lead Charleston.
