W.Va. deputy burned in fire

October 04, 2008

A Jefferson County Sheriff's Department deputy was taken to a hospital in Washington, D.C., after he suffered burns in a fire Friday night at Jefferson High School.

Lt. Donnie Lanham of the Independent Fire Company said the deputy suffered the burns about 8:35 p.m. after he entered a shed that was on fire between the baseball and football fields near the high school.

The condition of the deputy was unknown late Friday, Lanham said.

The deputy was being treated by an EMS crew when firefighters arrived, Lanham said. A medical helicopter arrived shortly thereafter and flew the deputy to a burn center in Washington.

Lanham said the fire was out when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The origin of the fire was "suspicious," Lanham said.
