County golfers blown off course

October 04, 2008|By TIM KOELBLE

Friday afternoon was a day in which the wind-o-meter sent scores soaring in the Washington County Public Schools golf championship at Black Rock Golf Course.

Only two players out of 36 broke 80 over the par-72 layout at Black Rock. One led the way to a team championship.

Haeun Lee battled her way to a 3-over-par 75 to lead Smithsburg to its second straight title with a team total of 339 strokes, two better than North Hagers-town's 341.

Clear Spring senior T.J. Socks posted the best score among male golfers with a 6-over-par 78.

Otherwise, scores ranged from 81 to 121 on a sunny but windy afternoon.

Counting toward Smithsburg's team total were Chris Bushey (83), A.J. Minnich (90) and Bo Phillips (91).

North Hagerstown's Kyle Walters led the Hubs with an 81 and Conner Spessard was right behind with an 82 as North posed the largest threat to Smithsburg.

Lee posted three birdies -- one on No. 6 on the way to a front nine 38, the other two on holes 12 and 13 that helped her come in with a 37.

"My putting was really bad today," said Lee. "I had three three-putts and even missed a couple of par putts from two feet. My stroke was just too fast."

Lee also said the conditions were a little bothersome.

"The wind was tough, taking my shots left, especially on the front nine," she said. "But overall I'm happy."

Socks has been playing well of late and held on to his game to shoot a front-nine 40 and come in with a 38.

"I just go out and play my game," said Socks, who was bothered more by his short-game results. "Chips and three three-putts cost me."

In addition to Lee and Socks, only three other golfers managed to break 40 on either nine -- Walters had a 39-42, Bushey a 44-39 and Boonsboro's Luke Hoffman a 38-47-85 to lead the Warriors.

Zach Weber led Williamsport with a disappointing 89 and Joey Miller led South Hagerstown with a 92.

In the team standings, Boonsboro was third at 356, followed by Clear Spring (357), South (394) and Williamsport (398).
