Needless to say, a vacation horror

October 03, 2008|By JOAN BEERS, 32, Mercersburg, Pa.

My family has had some interesting vacations. One example I can give is a trip we took to Florida about eight years ago.

I got sick with vomiting and diarrhea the first night we were there. My father ended up going to the 24-hour Rite Aid at about 4 in the morning to get me some medicine.

My daughter got sick with the same thing the next night. My father had to go back to Rite Aid at 2 in the morning as she was 4 at the time and couldn't take the same medicine that I did. My father had a tooth abscess on him that same trip. Needless to say, it wasn't the best trip.

Another example I could give you occurred when we went to Ohio for the weekend. My son was 1 at the time and got an ulcerated throat. He couldn't eat or drink as his mouth was too sore. He also could not sleep and cried most of the trip. Needless to say, no one slept and it was not a great weekend.

We also went to North Carolina last year. While nothing eventful happened on the trip, the van would not start after we stopped for breakfast on the way home. We had to have it towed to a local car dealership. It turned out to be the fuel pump and we had to wait almost five hours while it was repaired. Needless to say, we got home five hours later than planned and ended up spending over $800 to have our van repaired.
