"This talk that Iran said they are going to wipe Israel off the face of the map - if you listened to public radio last week, the translator said the New York Times has mistranslated that quote. The actual translation was that one day the state of Israel will vanish. The president did not say that Iran would be responsible for this. Too bad the media messes this stuff up, and then perhaps with a hothead like McCain as president, put us into another war." - Washington County

"'I can see Russia from my back yard'. But you know what, I can see the moon from my back yard. Does that qualify me to be an astronaut? ... Get real, Republicans." - Williamsport

"I just wanted to say I've been getting The Herald-Mail since 1963, and I'm telling you right now, one more stupid change in that paper and I'm going to make a change to another paper. I'm getting tired of it. Every time you change everything, it's for the worst."

"I'm not a mathematician, but gas is down below $100 a barrel now. Four or five months ago, gas was $150 a barrel, and it was over $4. Now we just lost 40 percent of that, so if you do your math, shouldn't gas only be about $2.60 a gallon? ... I'm quite sure our big shots in the government will take care of it for us smaller people." - Williamsport

"Funkstown Early Childhood Education school has 20 to 26 children in each kindergarten class. I don't know if the Pre-K classes are as overcrowded. There are five portable buildings, and one empty classroom in the school that could be used for more classes. These children can't be getting much one-on-one attention. Also, can you imagine dealing with 20 to 26 5-year-olds by yourself all day long? The teachers have to be exhausted. As a parent, I feel the BOE should either extend the number of classrooms, or have teachers' aides for each teacher. This is entirely too many children for one teacher to deal with for seven hours a day."

"I think our country is in need of new leadership with young ideas. Like Kennedy in the '60s, I think Obama is the man for the new century. We can't afford four more years of Republican rule." - Hagerstown

"I see where the Republicans had their feelings hurt by Nancy Pelosi's speech, and they took their ball and went home. We as voters need to make sure they stay there." - Hagerstown

"I hope President Bush is thrilled to death he has finally brought our country down to its knees, down to the bottom of the '30s, when we all suffered through one depression, and it looks like this one is gonna be even worse. I just hope with the new administration that we get somebody in that has got enough sense in their feeble brain to bring our country out of this mess." - Hagerstown

"I think it's bad that the government has to loan the auto industry millions of dollars to help bail them out, when they don't want to take any concessions to help keep their jobs." - Sharpsburg

"Here's one bad thing about the bailout situation, that it got rejected and everything. Think what kind of situation our market would be in if seven years ago on Sept. 12, or Sept. 13, or whatever date George Bush went to Congress and the Senate and pretty much forced this war down everyone's throat, think if we'd have just took a couple of months - we didn't find no weapons of mass destruction ... maybe even a couple of weeks - put our brains together as a collective nation and came up with the best plan. We might have went to war, but we'd have probably went to war in the right place, and it would be over by now." - Hagerstown

"I'd like to know when our representatives are gonna start realizing that you don't vote the party, you vote the country." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"The Alliance Defense Fund, a group of lawyers that work for conservative causes, is challenging a 1954 law. It forbids tax-exempt churches from informing their people on how to elect honest, respectable leaders. The whole reason for tax exemption is for freedom of religion not to be threatened by the IRS. For 54 years, the IRS has refused any court confrontation over their ability to regulate ... 33 pastors are finally defying the IRS. I hope others will get a backbone and join in." - Tri-State

"Washington County Commissioners are currently starting to work on next year's budget. They are desperately going to need money, with the property values going down and with other state cutting back and so forth. They're either going to have to raise taxes or cut services. Tell them, and tell them every day, to cut services and lay employees off. Do not raise my taxes. In fact, reduce your taxes somewhat, to the constant yield." - Washington County

"I'm calling in regards to your new size newspaper and all, and I was just wondering if you're going to give all the subscribers magnifying glasses now, so they can read it." - Hagerstown
