Waynesboro fire closes South Church Street at square

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - South Church Street was closed at Center Square for more than an hour Wednesday as firefighters put out an apartment fire on an upper floor of the building that houses Frank's Pizza.

A 911 call at 5:30 p.m. alerted the Waynesboro Fire Department to smoke in an apartment and a possible fire in a wall at 4 W. Main St., according to Deputy Chief Trayer Stoops.

Fire departments from Mont Alto, Blue Ridge Summit, Leitersburg and New Franklin, as well as a Waynesboro ambulance, were at the scene.

Old downtown buildings have greater hazards, so more fire departments are automatically sent.

"With buildings like this, we have several more pieces of equipment in our (group) because of the possibilities," Stoops said.

Firefighters evacuated residents from the second and third floors, called for the power to be turned off and discovered a fire between two apartment walls on the second floor.

"We had a pressurized water extinguisher up there first," Stoops said, saying that firefighters next took a hose up the stairs.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remained under investigation by Waynesboro's fire marshal.

"The damage is minimal," Stoops said.
