Hagerstown Woolly Bear contest begins today

October 01, 2008

The Hagerstown almanac's annual Woolly Bear caterpillar contest begins today, business manager Gerald Spessard said.

Judges will accept entries through Oct. 31 for consideration for "cutest and cuddliest" and "biggest and woolliest" prizes, Spessard said. The person with the winning entry in each category will receive $100, and the runners-up in each category will receive $25, he said.

All entries should be taken to 1120 Professional Court, second floor. The office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Spessard recommended putting the entries in shoeboxes or jars with holes for air, along with some leaves or grass cuttings. He stressed that entrants should not mail the caterpillars.

Judges will attend to the needs of the caterpillars and release them to a natural habitat after judging, Spessard said.
