Rain could delay Waynesboro road work

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - If the forecast for rain today and Wednesday proves accurate, efforts to reconstruct CV Avenue in Waynesboro could be halted.

Fayetteville (Pa.) Contractors planned to apply base coat this week, but rain could delay that. Borough Engineer Kevin Grubbs said weather and standard construction delays will push the $400,000 project beyond the Oct. 15 paving deadline set by the state.

"I'm going to have to apply for an extension of blacktop," Grubbs said.

Fayetteville Contractors also has been working on East North Street between Broad and Church streets using Community Development Block Grant money. Once done, crews will move on to North Broad Street between Mt. Airy and Harbaugh avenues.

That transition should occur sometime next week, Grubbs said.

Borough crews will not be held to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation paving deadline when they begin Rotary Parking Lot work. Grant money will pay to overlay the lot behind West Main Street, restripe the spaces, improve the lighting and add a 5-foot-wide walkway around the perimeter.

"The maintenance department is preparing to run the conduit for the new lights," Grubbs said.
