Ten Frederick County students named National Merit semifinalists

FREDERICK, Md. -- Ten Frederick County Public Schools high school seniors achieved semifinalist status in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Their scores as juniors on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test placed them higher than the top 1 percent of students nationwide.  

They are Gov. Thomas Johnson High student Orestes Mavrothalassitis; Linganore High student Alexander O'Connor; Middletown High students Jonathan Blake, Alexis Kriete and Kathryn Woods; Urbana High students George Fu, Miranda Hagen, Julia Klein and Natalia St. Jean; and Walkersville High student Maria Bennici.

Each has the opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth more than $35 million, which will be offered next spring. Winners are chosen on the basis of the candidates' academic skills and achievements, extracurricular accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
