AFL-CIO Council makes endorsements

The Central Maryland AFL-CIO Council has endorsed local and federal candidates for the November election.

The council's picks are:

o Donna L. Brightman, Jacqueline Fischer, Meredith Fouche and Wayne D. Ridenour for Washington County Board of Education, a nonpartisan race

o Democrats Barack Obama for president and Joseph Biden for vice president

o Democrat Jennifer Dougherty for Maryland's 6th District in Congress

o Angie L. Fish and Kathryn B. Groth for Frederick County Board of Education, a nonpartisan race.

GOP HQ open three days a week

Washington County's Republicans have announced the hours for their 2008 campaign headquarters.

The office -- at 1561 Potomac Ave. in Long Meadow Shopping Center, near Port City Java -- is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m.

It's also open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

THIS Barr is already president

The increasing flurry of campaign press releases includes e-mails from "Barr for President."

That would be Bob Barr, a former Republican Congressman from Georgia, now running for president -- U.S. president -- on the Libertarian ticket.

He is not to be confused with Washington County's own President Barr -- John F. Barr, the president of the Washington County Commissioners.

Barr said people aren't mistaking him for the other Barr.

Despite the surname and office they (kind of) have in common, the local Barr isn't campaigning for the other Barr.

John McCain, the GOP candidate, is his man, fellow Republican John F. Barr said.
