Washington County's unemployment rate rose in August to 5.8 percent, higher than the state jobless figure but lower than the national rate, according to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation.
Maryland's jobless rate was 4.5 percent in August, the same as it was in July. The national rate was 6.1 percent in August, up from 5.7 percent in July.
Washington County's jobless rate in July was 5.2 percent.
Out of a labor force of 69,621 people, there were 4,007 people without jobs during August in Washington County, the labor department figures show.
In August 2007 and 2006, the county's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, and in August 2005, it was at 4.1 percent.
