Single moms group



FREDERICK, Md. -Families Plus offers a group for single moms and their children. Monthly meetings feature information, child care and food. October's meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Summer's Farm off Butterfly Lane. The meeting will feature pumpkin picking, children's activities and a discussion of budgeting and ways to achieve financial security. Gym open house



Gold's Gym presents A Taste of Gold open house and fundraiser from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Gold's Gym in Hagerstown.

The event will include free food, giveaways, and fitness challenges with prizes. Participants are asked to bring a child's item or toy for donation.

Hospice volunteer training



Hospice of Washington County Inc. has scheduled two fall volunteer training programs. The course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, Friday, Oct. 10, and Monday, Oct. 13. Another course will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 14 to 30. The first session in each is an overview of the Hospice concept of care and is open to the public.

Health-care forum



Washington County Disability Advisory Committee and Deafnet will present a forum on health care and people with disabilities from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Robinwood Medical Campus, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Room 142, blue entrance, in Hagerstown. Breast cancer awareness day



BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Morgan County will celebrate West Virginia Breast Cancer Awareness Day at noon Monday, Oct. 6, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital.

Dr. J. Kim, radiologist with Pro Radiology and War Memorial Hospital, will give a presentation on digital mammography. Learn about digital mammography and the hospital's new digital mammography system as well as breast cancer screening guidelines. A light lunch will be provided.

The event is sponsored by Morgan County Community Education Outreach Services and War Memorial Hospital.

Disability forum



A Washington County disability forum will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Robinwood Medical Center, Room 142, 11110 Medical Campus Drive, Hagerstown. Use the blue or silver entrances.

This is a chance for people with disabilities to share concerns and successes.

Stroke screening



WILLIAMSPORT - Residents living in and around the Williamsport community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. The complete screening package now includes a new heart rhythm screening which checks for irregular heartbeat, a major risk factor for stroke.

Life Line Screening will be at Williamsport Moose Lodge, 119 N. Conococheague St., on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Appointments begin at 9 a.m.

Suicide prevention conference



BALTIMORE - Maryland's 20th annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Baltimore's Martin West. The conference theme is "In our 20th Year: Building a Culture of Hope."

Keynote speaker is Terrie M. Williams, founder of The Stay Strong Foundation. Frank J. Kros, president of the Upside Down Organization will present "Suicide and the Teenage Brain."
