Man charged in purse snatching at Martinsburg Mall

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was charged Thursday in connection with a purse snatching in the parking lot of Martinsburg Mall, Martinsburg Police said in a news release.

Matthew Lonelle Brown, 25, of 616 North Ave., was charged with aggravated robbery, police said.

The incident happened a few minutes before 4 p.m. Thursday as a 57-year-old Winchester, Va., woman walked toward the mall, police said. The woman parked in front of Bon-Ton and was approaching the entrance when she heard someone running and yelling, "Hey, hey!" police said. The woman turned around, thinking it was someone she knew, and a man grabbed her purse from her arm, police said. The man fled in a green Ford Mustang, police said.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department stopped a green Mustang on Kaufman Avenue and found Brown inside with the purse, police said. Brown said he had found the purse on Mall Drive, police said.

Brown was being held at Eastern Regional Jail on $50,000 bond, according to a spokesman there.
