MERCERSBURG, PA. -- A 4-year-old girl was struck by a dump truck Wednesday when she ran into the street in front of 119 S. Park Ave., Mercersburg Police Officer Michael Benninghoff said.

The girl was flown to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, where emergency room staff said she had a broken leg, cuts on her face and swelling to her brain, Benninghoff said. He was unable to provide the girl's condition.

The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. when the girl ran out of the house and into the street, Benninghoff said. A van blocked the girl's view of the approaching truck, he said.

When Benninghoff arrived at the scene, the girl was lying on the ground and appeared unconscious, he said. The Mercersburg, Mongtomery Peters and Warren Fire Co. responded to the accident, emergency dispatchers said.
