Police seek at least one suspect in downtown Martinsburg robberies

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police were looking for at least one suspect in robberies early Monday in downtown Martinsburg in which two men said they were struck in the head before their wallets were taken in separate attacks.

A suspect seen leaving the area of a reported robbery in the 200 block of East Martin Street was described as a black male between 6 feet and 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. The suspect was wearing dark clothing in the robbery, which occurred about 6:27 a.m., police said.

A 53-year-old Martinsburg man received a head injury after being accosted on the sidewalk, police said. A witness told police that he heard a person screaming for help and encountered a man who fled toward Queen Street.

The victim said he was walking toward the train station when he was struck in the head from behind. He described his attacker as a black male who demanded his wallet and knocked him to the ground, police said. The victim was struck several times by the suspect, who also took the victim's wallet. The man was treated at City Hospital, police said.

A suspect description wasn't released for a robbery that occurred about 2:20 a.m. in the 100 block of East Race Street.

Police said the 53-year-old victim in the East Race Street attack told authorities he was struck in the head from behind after leaving Variety Books & Video store. The victim, a Virginia resident, woke up in the middle of the street. He discovered his wallet was taken, reported the robbery and was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg for treatment, police said.
